Planning a small, intimate wedding in London? This guide covers everything how many hours you actually need, the best town halls and registry offices, what fits into 2 hours of coverage, and how to get great photos without overspending.

What Is a Micro Wedding?

A micro wedding is a small, intentional celebration usually between 5 and 30 guests, though some couples have just two witnesses and nobody else. It is not a compromise. It is a choice. Couples who go down this route tend to care more about quality than quantity fewer people around the table, more space to be present with the ones who matter most.

In London, micro weddings usually take place at a registry office or town hall, followed by portraits nearby and a relaxed meal or drinks at a favourite restaurant or pub. The whole day can often be done in a few hours. There are no complicated seating plans, no long guest lists to manage, and no timeline to coordinate across six different suppliers. If you are weighing up whether this kind of day suits you, our micro wedding photography walks through what the experience typically looks like from start to finish.

What makes micro weddings so photogenic is exactly what makes them special as a day. Fewer guests means the emotion is closer to the surface. You are not performing for a room of 150 people you are just getting married, surrounded by the people you love most. That creates natural, honest, powerful photographs.

"Fewer guests, less noise, and more space to be in the moment — some of the most powerful wedding photographs come from the smallest celebrations."

London Micro Wedding Photographer

Why London Is One of the Best Places for a Micro Wedding

London works particularly well for micro weddings because so much is close together. Your registry office, portrait locations, and a great place to eat are often all within walking distance of each other. You are not spending the day driving between venues you are walking around one of the world's greatest cities on one of the best days of your life.

The variety of backdrops London offers in a small area is hard to match anywhere else in the UK. Historic stone buildings, quiet cobbled mews, riverside paths, parks with wide-open views, bold street art, and grand Victorian staircases all within minutes of the ceremony venue. Most couples do not need to travel far at all to get genuinely different and interesting portrait locations.

London's registry offices and town halls are also well set up for small weddings. Guest numbers are kept manageable, ceremonies are efficient and well-run, and many of the buildings themselves Old Marylebone Town Hall, Chelsea Old Town Hall, Islington Town Hall, Hackney Town Hall are genuinely beautiful inside and out. If you are specifically planning a civil ceremony, our civil wedding photographer covers exactly how we approach these shorter, town hall-based ceremonies across every London borough.

How Many Hours of Photography Do You Need for a Micro Wedding?

This is the question most couples ask first. The honest answer is: it depends on what you want from your photos. But for most registry office and town hall micro weddings in London, two to three hours is enough to cover the key moments properly.

2 Hours What It Actually Covers

Two hours is the right starting point for a registry office ceremony with a small number of guests. Our 2-hour wedding photography package starts at £260 and covers everything most couples need for a registry office or town hall ceremony arrival, the full ceremony, confetti, family groups, and couple portraits nearby. Here is a realistic breakdown of how that time flows:

0:00–0:15

Arrival & Guests

We arrive before you to photograph guests arriving, the venue exterior, any details flowers, rings, order of service. The atmosphere before the ceremony is full of nervous energy and genuine anticipation.

0:15–0:45

The Ceremony

Full ceremony coverage entrance, vows, ring exchange, signing the register, first kiss photographed quietly and without flash disrupting the moment. Registry office ceremonies typically run 20 to 30 minutes.

0:45–1:00

Confetti Exit & Congratulations

The exit from the ceremony room confetti, bubbles, hugs, handshakes. Candid shots of guests congratulating you. Some of the most natural and joyful moments of the whole day happen here.

1:00–1:30

Family Group Photos

We move through your family group list efficiently. For a 2-hour booking, 5 to 7 combinations is realistic enough to cover the key groups without everyone standing around waiting.

1:30–2:00

Couple Portraits

We take you to the best nearby spot a garden, a quiet street, a park for relaxed couple portraits. No forced posing. Just the two of you walking and talking while we photograph.

The key to making 2 hours work is keeping the group list short and choosing a portrait location close to the venue. If you have more than 20 guests or want portraits at multiple locations, 3 hours gives you the breathing room to do it without feeling rushed.

Important note on timing

Registry office ceremonies often run a few minutes late, and congratulations from guests can take longer than expected. Build in a small buffer. A 2-hour booking with a ceremony that starts 10 minutes late is still fine just keep the group list short and choose a portrait spot that is a very short walk away.

If your day runs longer than planned, we can add an extra hour at £80. We stay flexible and adjust on the day. You can see the full hourly breakdown on our packages and prices page.

3 to 4 Hours — When You Want More Breathing Room

Three to four hours is the sweet spot for couples who want the ceremony covered fully, a good set of couple portraits, some candid moments with guests at drinks or lunch, and a little more flexibility throughout the day. It also allows time for portraits at more than one location perhaps outside the venue and then a short walk to a park or interesting street. Our London wedding photography prices has a full breakdown of every package from 2 hours up to a full 10-hour day, so you can see exactly what each option includes before you commit to anything.

The Best Portrait Locations Near London Registry Offices

One of the great advantages of London micro weddings is how much variety you can get within a short walk of your ceremony venue. Here are our favourite portrait spots near the most popular registry offices.

Near Old Marylebone Town Hall

The quiet cobbled mews just behind the building work brilliantly for intimate couple portraits private and completely different in feel from the grand exterior shots. Regent's Park is a 10-minute walk and worth the trip on a good day. The Nash terraces provide a beautiful backdrop. If you are booking Old Marylebone for your wedding, our dedicated Marylebone Town Hall wedding photographer has a detailed guide to the ceremony rooms, timings, and the best portrait spots nearby.

Near Chelsea Old Town Hall

Oakley Street and the surrounding Chelsea side streets are genuinely lovely quiet, residential, with beautiful mews and doorways. Albert Bridge is a 5-minute walk and makes for one of London's most recognisable portrait locations. St Luke's Gardens is directly behind the venue. If you want something lively, King's Road with a classic red double-decker bus in the background is hard to beat.

Near Islington Town Hall

Richmond Grove, just beside the venue, has a pleasant residential feel good for quiet portraits. Milner's Square is nearby for a little more greenery. For reception, the Drapers Arms on Barnsbury Street is consistently popular private dining room upstairs, great food, and only a short walk from the town hall.

Near Hackney Town Hall

The surrounding East London streets offer brilliant character street art, independent cafes, interesting architecture. Victoria Park is a short ride away for wider, greener portraits. We cover weddings at Hackney Town Hall regularly as part of our affordable London wedding photography service the East London setting works especially well for couples who want something that feels different from a classic formal backdrop.

Near Camden Town Hall

St Pancras International is a short walk and one of the most striking architectural backdrops in London. Granary Square near King's Cross has a wide open feel great for bigger group shots. Judd Street directly outside Camden Town Hall is quieter than you would expect and works well for portraits without the crowds.

Adding Videography to Your Micro Wedding

Many couples having a micro wedding also want a short film to go alongside their photos particularly for families who could not attend, or simply to have a way to relive the ceremony in motion. Our affordable wedding films service is available as an add-on to any photography package from £100 per hour. We use professional Sony cameras, a Steadicam, and a gimbal, and the final film includes the full ceremony footage and a cinematic highlight reel delivered as an HD digital download.

One of the biggest advantages of booking both with us is that one team covers everything. When a separate photography and videography company both turn up to a small ceremony, they can end up getting in each other's way especially in a compact room at a registry office. With HOBS FILMS, that is not a problem.

Our London wedding videography service works alongside our photography from the start, sharing the same plan for the day and the same approach to staying unobtrusive. Combined packages start at £610 for 3 hours.

What 2-Hour Coverage Does Not Include — and Why That's Fine

It is important to be clear about this before you book. Two hours of wedding photography will not cover your full day. There is no getting-ready coverage, no extended guest moments throughout the evening, and no full story from beginning to end. What you get is a beautiful, honest record of a specific part of your day the ceremony, the immediate aftermath, and some couple portraits.

For many couples, that is exactly right. If you are having a micro wedding, you are already choosing to focus on what matters and the photography should reflect that. You do not need 600 images from a 10-hour day if your wedding is two hours at a registry office followed by lunch with your closest people.

Your gallery will feel like a highlight of the core moments, not a full documentary. Some couples find that more meaningful. If you want to see what that kind of gallery actually looks like, our wedding gallery includes examples from registry office and micro wedding days alongside larger celebrations.

"It is about choosing what matters most and having those moments captured properly not about trying to fit everything in."

Micro Weddings for Asian, Muslim & Multicultural Couples

Not all micro weddings are the same. A Nikah ceremony at a London mosque is different from a Sikh ceremony at a Gurdwara, which is different again from a civil partnership at Chelsea Town Hall. We cover all of these, and we approach each one with a working knowledge of what happens and when.

For Muslim couples having a short Nikah before a larger Walima celebration, our 2-hour package covers the ceremony, the Nikah Nama signing, and portraits and we can extend it to cover the Walima if needed. Our Muslim wedding photography London page has more detail on how we approach these ceremonies specifically, including our experience photographing at London mosques across multiple boroughs.

For couples having a Mehndi night or pre-wedding ceremony as a smaller standalone event, our Mehndi wedding photographer service covers just the Mehndi by itself from £80 per hour, with no obligation to book us for the main wedding day as well.

If you are planning a multi-day Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, or South Asian wedding in London, our Asian wedding photography London page covers each ceremony type in detail including the specific rituals we photograph, the venues we know well, and how multi-day packages are priced.

Tips for Planning Your London Micro Wedding

  1. Keep the group photo list short. For a 2-hour booking, aim for 5 to 7 combinations. Every additional group takes 3 to 5 minutes to organise and photograph, and it adds up quickly. Think about which combinations genuinely matter and cut the rest.

  2. Choose a portrait location within walking distance. The best micro wedding days flow naturally from one thing to the next. If you have to drive 20 minutes for portraits, you lose momentum and time. Most London registry offices have good portrait spots a 2 to 5 minute walk away.

  3. Give yourselves more time than you think you need. Ceremonies often start a few minutes late. Guests take longer to congratulate you than expected. Building in a little breathing room makes everything feel more relaxed and nothing feels rushed.

  4. Tell your photographer your priorities before the day. If couple portraits matter more than group shots, say so. If you really want the confetti moment but are less bothered about posed groups, we adjust the plan. The more clearly we know what matters to you, the better the photos will be.

  5. Consider a weekday date. Saturday bookings at London registry offices get busy in peak season multiple weddings back-to-back, limited time for photos outside the building. Weekday dates are more relaxed, you often get more time in and around the venue, and our rates are the same regardless of the day.

  6. Think about where to eat or drink afterwards. The best micro weddings flow from the ceremony into something personal a long lunch at a favourite restaurant, drinks in a private room at a good pub, or a picnic in a park. It does not need to be formal. It just needs to feel like you.

  7. Ask your photographer if they can be a witness. If you only have one witness, most photographers who cover intimate weddings regularly will sign the register for you. We do this at elopements and very small ceremonies when asked just mention it when you enquire.

Who Is a London Micro Wedding Right For?

Couples who want a relaxed, personal day

If the idea of coordinating 120 guests, a full reception, and a 10-hour timeline feels overwhelming rather than exciting, a micro wedding is probably a better fit. You get a day that is genuinely about the two of you not about managing everyone else's experience.

Couples doing the legal part before a bigger celebration

Many couples register their marriage at a London registry office and then hold a bigger party or celebrant-led ceremony elsewhere sometimes abroad, sometimes at a later date. The legal ceremony is quiet and personal, and 2 hours of photography covers it beautifully. Our civil wedding photographer service is specifically set up for this short, efficient coverage of the ceremony with no unnecessary extras.

Elopements just the two of you

Getting married with just two witnesses and nobody else? London is actually one of the easiest cities in the world to elope in. The registry offices are professional and welcoming, and you can be legally married in under an hour. We can act as a witness if needed, and our 2-hour package covers the ceremony and portraits for £260.

Couples who want great photos without the full-day commitment

Not every couple wants or needs a photographer with them for 10 hours. If you mainly want a record of your ceremony and some couple portraits, our affordable wedding photography packages start from £260 and give you exactly that nothing more, nothing less, at a price that does not require you to rethink your budget.

Civil ceremonies

We cover civil partnerships in exactly the same way as weddings same packages, same pricing, same approach. Many of the London town halls and registry offices are particularly welcoming and experienced with civil partnership ceremonies, and they make for beautiful, intimate days.

Common Questions About Micro Wedding Photography in London

What counts as a micro wedding?

Most photographers define a micro wedding as a celebration with 30 or fewer guests. Some are even smaller just the couple and two witnesses. In London, the most common setup is a registry office or town hall ceremony with 5 to 20 guests, followed by portraits and then lunch or drinks at a nearby venue.

Is 2 hours of photography really enough?

For a registry office or town hall ceremony with fewer than 20 guests, yes — if you are realistic about what you want. Two hours covers the ceremony, confetti, 5 to 7 family groups, and 20 to 30 minutes of couple portraits nearby. Our dedicated 2-hour wedding photography goes into a lot more detail on this — including an exact timeline and a list of everything included — if you want to read further before deciding.

Can you recommend a registry office?

Yes. The best option depends on your guest numbers, location, and style. Old Marylebone Town Hall and Chelsea Old Town Hall are the most popular and most photogenic. Islington Town Hall is great for Art Deco interiors and a vibrant North London feel. Fitzrovia Chapel is the most intimate and atmospheric. Tell us what you are looking for and we can help you narrow it down.

Do you cover micro weddings outside London?

Yes. All UK travel is included. We cover registry offices and micro weddings across Essex, Hertfordshire, Kent, Surrey, Berkshire, Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, and everywhere in between. Get in touch with your location and date and we will confirm availability.

Can I book photography and video together?

Yes. Combined photography and videography starts at £610 for 3 hours. Our London wedding videography service uses the same unobtrusive approach as our photography one team, one plan, no two suppliers in each other's way during the ceremony.

How quickly do we get our photos?

Within 7 days, via a password-protected online gallery. Full-resolution files are available to download directly and share with family. A USB drive is also included and posted to you.

Do you cover Nikah and Muslim micro weddings?

Yes. We regularly photograph Nikah ceremonies at mosques and private venues across London. Our London mosque Nikah photographer service covers ceremonies at mosques across all London boroughs, and our Muslim wedding photography London page has more detail on how we cover the full programmed of events Nikah, Mehndi, and Walima.
